Day 1: The American Civil War

1. Bedrock Truths

The Civil War is built on two hard facts that never change.

• Fact 1: Slavery is the spark.
  The Southern states wanted to keep slavery. They said it was their “greatest material interest.”
  Analogy: Imagine a big pizza that everyone wants to share. The South wants to keep a slice for themselves, while the North says the pizza should be split fairly. The fight starts when the South refuses to share.

• Fact 2: The Union is a single country.
  The U.S. Constitution says the states belong to one nation. A state cannot leave on its own.
  Analogy: Think of a school team. If one student leaves, the team still stays together. The team can’t just split into two teams because one player decided to quit.

FIRST PRINCIPLE:
“The United States is one country; states cannot legally leave it, and the Southern states fought to keep slavery.”

2. Why the War Began

The two facts collide.
The South’s desire to keep slavery clashed with the North’s belief that the Union must stay whole. When Southern leaders declared secession, the North responded with military force, turning a political disagreement into a full‑scale war.
